So WHO doesn’t have insurance again????
Sorry, didn’t get this posted yesterday as I had promised, but let’s wrap this mess up. We returned to AZ about 2 or 3am Tuesday morning and I promptly passed out. Waking up about 10 we got ready and headed off to get an idea of what exactly we were going to have to deal with. I should take a small step back (not sure if I already covered this or not) but Josh did check and realized that his insurance had in fact been cancelled due to a miscalculation with when payments were attempted to be pulled from his account and his balance. Yea, we’ve all done that and that’s one of the reasons I hate those automatic payment options.
Obviously needing new insurance I told him we should go see my insurance agent since I was sure they could get him setup, and I needed to pay mine as well which was due the next day anyway. So we stop in and he starts to get info on obtaining insurance. I also mention I have to make a payment so she looks up my account only to find out that I ALSO had failed to make a payment, apparently I crossed up which payments applied to which months and was supposed to have made a payment a month ago. Guess you are supposed to open the mail that comes to you, who knew?!?!?!
So she calls my insurance company to get the amount required to restart my insurance policy and I was thinking that since my monthly payments are just a little less than $90 I’d probably have to pay somewhere around $200 for the month I missed, and the current month. Boy was I wrong! Payment required to get my insurance restarted was $350!!! WTH!!! Apparently they wanted not only the months I expected, but also the following month (so now I don’t have a payment due until August, but holy crap! Since my insurance has lapsed due to the non-payment we had to address that before I also ended up having to deal with the police deciding to take my plates and risking that the next officers wouldn’t be so nice and would actually hand me the ticket that went hand-in-hand with this little “oversight” of allowing your insurance to lapse.
With my insurance re-activated we then focused again on Josh’s tasks and were able to get him insured again (at less than Geico was even charging) and he now had all the appropriate documents so he could obtain new plates for his car so off we headed to the motor vehicle department.
The stop here was actually quite quick and concise, his number was called within just a few minutes of walking inside. Josh went over to the appropriate window while Billy and I sat in the waiting area. A few moments later I noticed Josh was looking my way and I knew what was happening, he needed some help. As I walked up he said the replacement plate was going to cost $50… what the hell do they make these new plates out of?!?! Handing over $50 he was given a new plate and all was right with the world again… well as right as our world ever seems to be.
We returned to the car, he applied his new plate and off he went to work. Things are now back to where they were before the cops pulled up, he still needs to address the cause of the car stalling out (pretty sure he just needs to replace the catalytic converter) but other than that, we are both insured once again, and are no longer in risk of some ridiculous tickets or other possible interactions with law enforcement.
Lesson learned… do NOT allow your insurance to lapse as it will cause some CRAZY repercussions.
I already have an idea for my next post… may write it up still today for two in one day, but we’ll see…
